My first exposure to needhams was in Lewiston, 1968. At 17, I learned to love them for the rest of my life. These were homemade by Lou Rod Candy on Sabatus Street. They were JUST RIGHT; a great blend of chewy and chocolatey sweet!
By the way, speaking of the Washington Post, a good friend and fraternity brother at UMO became a sportswriter there and then Editor at the BDN. Wasn't there very long.
By the way, did you ever write anything about why and how Howard Hughes bought the Bangor Daily Commercial? He had some talented people and one became pretty well known at the Washington Post.
I heard somewhere that Needhams were sold on passenger trains in Maine. My last trip on a passenger train in Maine (not counting those train trips to nowhere for tourists) was Bangor to Boston in 1954 or 55 to see Bangor High play in the New England Tournament. Coach Red Barry, Bill Cohen, Danny Drinon, Dave Carlisle, Karl Daigle and of course manger Sheldon Hartstone. I don't remember buying Needhams but I think the company that made them went out of business when the trains stopped.
